What happens when your brain is deprived of stimulation? What effect does being cut off from interaction with the outside world have on a person? What effect does it have on me, when I am locked in a windowless, soundproof isolation chamber for three days? In this episode of Mind Field, I take both an objective and a very intimate look at Isolation.

I was kinda in a situation like this. I tested positive for covid back in November 2020, and being In the army I was immediately isolated. I was kept in a room with a bathroom and a good bed. Besides that I only had my phone to keep me busy and even then I was horribly bored out of my mind. You get tired of looking JUST at your phone for 10 days. My sleeping rhythm also got really messed up as well as my appetite (they gave us three meals usually around their respective times, but there be some days where they forget to bring food). I couldn’t imagine actually going through no stimulus type of isolation like Michael has

I could do 3 days in isolation but I'd need something better than Soylent. Bleh.
I'll give you all a few tricks. Use the objects you have to create games. You could use the soylent bottles as chess pieces for instance. Organize, reorganize and then organize again. Write a play in your head and act it out. Tell yourself stories and make new ones up. Count the bits of carpet, determine which ones you like the most and appoint them as vassals of the rest of the carpet. Rule over your carpet kingdom in perpetuity. See how many bottles you can stack, make different shapes and see how tall they can get.
Find things you can control and control them. Like the prisoner said about his breathing, how he would just focus on it. Never forget the maxim: "I think, therefore I am."

Isolation like that does change you but it doesnt mean it has to break you, just so long as you bend instead. I'd say it made me more speculative and cynical. Each thing I experience may or may not be real so I should determine whether it is before acting. That may sound tough but it is a great defense against "fake news" and things of that nature. Spending extra attention to whether things are true in reality or someones ideological spill over is an added bonus. Delusions are not always psychosis. Some people in reality believe things that are not supported by reality itself and because they never bother to check to see if they're delusional; they continue believing those things for years and years. It created some very sublime moments where I was at my least connected with reality but somehow still more aware of reality than everyone around me because it was the center of an intense focus and I was constantly double checking it. Those are the only moments where I've ever truly felt crazy. Like I'm counting the rows of laces on my sneakers to make sure they havent changed since I put them on and people are talking to me about how we're all going to get locked into FEMA camps, how there are nazi bases on the back of the moon, how we never went to the moon, flat earth etc. Regular logical people, not crazy ones, just people locked in their own delusional bubbles of social media who dont bother to check if what they believe is in line with reality and constantly feed their confirmation bias. Using logic but not skepticism.

    • Jarthen Greenmeadow

Dont worry about losing reality. Make a list of all the things that are real and all the fantasies you've constructed. Never and I do mean NEVER allow those two compartments to cross. The fear about losing reality is based in not knowing what is going on around you but if you've cataloged everything around you those things become anchors to reality. That is to say: You may lose reality but reality will never lose you. Certain physical laws apply in reality that do not apply in delusions. Things like gravity or equal and opposite reaction dont really function in delusions. As long as you put physics into the "real" category you can always test reality itself by simple physical interaction. A pushup cannot propel you into the sky. The trick is in the checking. Do it so often it becomes habitual. Push on walls, touch your entire body and feel the sensations. Those are real. Easy trick for isolation to determine if something is unreal is if there are other people: its fantasy, if physics dont apply: its fantasy, if you cant measure it the same way twice: its fantasy. Doing simple arithmetic can help (1+1=2: real) as well doing math of triple digit numbers in your head (addition or multiplication are best imo) because in delusions arithmetic stops functioning almost entirely especially at the triple digit level. Your mind does not inherently understand 567 x 846 (unless you're a mathematician maybe) so in a dream or delusion those types of maths wont function correctly. You'll come out with the wrong answer and think its the right one until you redo the math while in reality and then it becomes blatantly clear that the experience was no real. Things as simple as 1+1 can become unanswerable in a delusion, it can equal 5 or 10 or 10,000. If that makes sense (your mind doesnt question it): What you are experiencing isnt real. You can see this at 25:06. Arithmetic is breaking down. Source: Cabin fever during the winter a dozen times or so.

Imagine having a dream of leaving the room, then when you really do, you never know if you're actually awake or still asleep in the room, and everything you have could be ripped away at any moment, your family, friends, life, all of it was a dream and you're still there, alone in the room, with the door still shut and locked. If things like this can damage and warp our perception of reality, could someone who even dies from this, possibly be trapped in a nightmare like that for years in their mind, while they die in hours in real life?

As a teenager, my step-mother and I did not get along. She was only 10 years older than me, so we butted heads frequently. I did not make things easy on her, so I was constantly placed on "restriction" by being sent to my room. When she realized that her punishment wasn't working, mostly because I could entertain myself with drawing or reading or building models, she and my dad removed everything from my room, except for my clothes and my bed. There was absolutely nothing that I could use for entertainment or to pass the time. This went on for a little more than a year. I wasn't allowed to even have interactions with my sister. Any time that she would stop at my room door and ask me if I was okay, my step-mom would chastise her. I could leave my room only to eat or to go to school. It was a miserable existence. While going to the table to eat, I had to turn my eyes away from the living room TV. Anytime that I'd ask how much longer I'd have to be on restrictions, my step-mom would tell me that every time I asked, that she'd add more time. I just got to a point where I shut down. I was defeated and gave up on ever being able to live a normal life. I would sneak small pieces of paper or small sticks or rocks into my room to make things. I made small trinkets and objects that I'd try to hide, but they'd always find them and more time would be added to my restriction. I talked to myself a lot and got good at imagining or seeing things in a way that others could not. That still holds true today, in a good way. I'm able to see the good in things that most people cannot. Seeing Michael go through the isolation brought back the awful memories from my experience. I did a lot of thinking during that year. This took place in the late 1980s, so it has been a long time, but I still remember how it felt. I knew back then that I was being robbed or my youth and there was nothing that I could do. I left their house after a huge fight and I joined the U.S. Navy and never went back. The Navy was easy compared to the isolation, so in a way, I guess you could say she prepared me for the worst. After I left my dad's house, I felt instant relief, but still had a hard time relating to other peers. I lost out on important teenage interaction and it took me years to feel comfortable around people. Today, more than three decades later, I consider myself an introvert and feel more comfortable being by myself. I retired from the Navy in 2011 and in 2012, my dad apologized to me for what they put me through. I accepted the apology, but sometimes wonder what I might have been like today if I had never been subjected to that horrible treatment.
