AMADEUS REMASTERED HD - MOZART INSULTS SALIERI BY PLAYING HIS OWN PIECE BETTER THAN HE DID

This is one of my favorite scenes from Amadeus. It is rare for a film to have two actors be nominated for the same award. Thomas Hulce eventually lost to F. Murray Abraham at the Oscars, but there is no denying that both gave outstanding performances.

It was said that the real Mozart had a very childlike laugh which Hulce does his best imaginative version of. The laugh is so jarring and out of the blue that it catches the Emperor off guard twice.

Mozart is either arrogant or socially unaware because he insults Salieri multiple times. As Mozart plays Salieri's little march and notes "the rest is just the same, isn't it?" you can see how maligned Salieri felt. Then to top it off Mozart declares "that doesn't quite work, now does it?" and then proceeds to take Salieri's tune and add embellishments and improvisation such that Salieri can only look on in jealousy mixed with resentment.

Salieri's jealousy and contempt for Mozart is best summed up with the line "Grazie, Signore..." as he looks up at the crucifix.

All rights to Amadeus (Orion pictures).

The emperor butchered Salieri's piece, but Mozart was able to play it perfectly by only hearing it and then improvising the melody... "the rest is just the same, isn't it?" Mozart so innocent in his behavior he doesn't realize how insulting he is LOL

@Albert Kirsch Great question. I've listened to it but not often. I used to play the clarinet myself and I hated it the whole time. It's still my least favorite instrument but I've been to solo Mozart clarinet recitals in the past which blew my mind. Unfortunately, I can't remember the musicians. It was a long time ago. There's a sharp transition between the lower and higher registers with the clarinet. It can sound like two different instruments but listening to Mozart's compositions handles this problem with the clarinet brilliantly. Thanks to you, I will listen to Mozart's clarinet concertos today.

@June Swinford most likely he was simply not a great musician, and held his post by subterfuge, indecency, and manipulation All too common everywhere you look nowadays. You ever seen a COO or CEO or whatnot barely working, blaming everyone around him while the company continues to print money? It's my opinion of most senior management wherever I go.

it is true about one hearing only. there was a piece written in the early 1600s called Mis erere, for the pope, and played only at the vatican every easter and good friday, it was illegal to copy the muic, as it would recieve a jail sentence. only the pope's choir could see it for practice the week of easter and was always locked up. mozart was 14 years old and his father took him to the vatical during easter and he heard the entire piece. once. that night, he though of how lovely it was and wrote the entire thing out from memory. he actaully wound up getting some kind of special honor/award from the pope

The alleged envy behind the film's screenplay and the consequent enmity between the two composers is completely unlikely, also because Salieri gained great fame during his long career (Mozart, on the other hand, reached the pinnacle of fame after his death) [ 1]; moreover, among his pupils there was one of the sons of Mozart himself, Franz Xaver Wolfgang. The tragedy is God did give Salieri music perfection in the form of Mozart. He was just too stubborn to see it at the time. If you remember, old Salieri regrets killing Mozart. (Obviously this is all fiction)

Well, I think most of you have missed the point. But first of all- Mozart did appreciate Salieri very much.- The clue in this film is not Mozart despite the title of the film. Mozart here is just an "addition" to the real story. I´m an artist my self and I do understand very well the question which is behind almost everything. Mediocrity!! This film talks about a destiny most human beings have to live with. We are mediocre! I´m mediocre as an artist. The german word for mediocrity is "Mittelmaß", Mittel=middle of.., and "maß" -measure, degree, and there is an other important word related to mediocrity which is "Durchschnitt" means average. Salieri is not average, in his time he was highly appreciated. There are three questions which describe our live, our drama as human beings: what is beauty, what is love, is there a god? The idea, the conzept of Mozart confronts us with the very question about what the hell we are doing here. In the sense of philosopher Plato god is the (absolute) greatest and smallest in the same time. Due human beings cannot define the absolute, being allways mediocre, means in the middle of the possible smallest and biggest, we always strive to understand how fare it can go for us as human beings. This is the reason wy the as best understood seems to be "like god". Beautiful people normally have easier success in life. Wy? We don´t know. Beauty can be understood as "similar to god".We all strive for a balanced live which brings balance between "good" and "bad". Close is the question "is it good enough?" Mozart- and he is not the only one- shows to us that there is a mysterious 1 step more towards perfection. Perfection- what ever this means- is always relating to a world of many different steps of "being good". What is "good"? Looking after this soon we will discover that there is NEVER an absolute top. It is a complicated matter I´m talking about. If you like to understand better, look in the internet to "http://microsculpture.net/". What you can see there is an absolute beauty which to understand is not our´s. Looking to those pictures we have an idea about what absolute beauty is, but we cannot name, ore describe it. Einstein stated "not the how is the secret, but the wy"

I hate this movie. Mozart was a one in 500 year genius, of the calibre of Newton, Einstein, and possibly Hawking, and they portray him as a drunken buffoon. Destiny lays its fire upon strange hearths. While Papa Hayden was living large in Prince Esterhazy’s court, Mozart was dying 50 years before his time. I effin hate this movie.

At 8:43, Salieri looks like he wants to cry... and I can't decide if it's out of embarrassment or because the music is beautiful. Abraham's performance is so nuanced throughout the film - he masterfully captures the balance between Salieri being envious and in awe of Mozart's talent.

We watched this movie in classical music appreciation in college after the class I went up and tried to play the song by ear on the piano in the back of the room thinking no one was watching nailed it. Little did I know the professor was still in the room in the front behind the curtains when he heard it he went walking up the stairs to see who was playing, I got up out of that room and ran before he could see me I don’t want that kind of pressure. The next week first thing during class he went on a rant about how if anyone in the class was a musical genius he would have noticed by now for like 5 minutes everyone else was looking at him like what the hell os wrong with this guy. And I just had to put my mouth in my hands to keep from bursting into laughter and that was the greatest class I ever had those 5 minutes were so damn sweet.

Tom and F. Murray are wonderful in this scene. As well as everyone else. But Jeffrey Jones makes this scene special IMO. He plays a great emperor. And I love how the Emperor is possessive of Mozart right from the beginning, but especially after Mozart wants the opera to be in German. The staging is excellent, the way the Emperor stands next to Mozart, facing the court. And then the Emperor commands Mozart to play Salieri's piece with a very regal, "show us."

I find Salieri's grievance to be stupid.
He's a royal court composer which means he's still damn good, and is recognized & endorsed enough to have high status.
Mozart, the renowned genius, seems to enjoy drawing out inspiration from his music.
So what if Mozart is a bit of an insensitive prick? He's proven happy to collaborate with Salieri, and that is proof that Salieri has _The Music_ in him, which he keeps thanking his God for. Pretty sure Mozart wouldn't collaborate with just anyone.
Aside, this movie was amazing. I saw it as a kid in the theater.

This scene was so very brilliant it appealed to everyone relating to music..the writer, the beginner, the performer, the classically trained, the gifted, the teacher and the audience. Each word, look or gesture spoke volumes I just love this scene and this movie.
